Hmmm...sounds familiar, I think. Although the campaign doesn't want to bring this up, Lincoln had a lot of similarities to Barack in terms of experiences.
To summarize, there have been lots of really bad presidents who were in politics for decades, and lots of really good presidents who weren't.
