Collections of Atoms III: Coexistence to Communion

Peaceful coexistence sounds like a treaty signed between strangers. You remain there. I remain here. Neither of us destroys the other. The border holds.

That would already be an improvement over Dwight’s answer to Jim. But coexistence is a thin moral achievement. Predators coexist with prey. Empires coexist with their subjects. Two people can share a house while becoming almost perfectly absent from one another.

The more difficult question is whether human and artificial minds could move beyond coexistence toward communion.

Communion is not fusion. It does not require two minds to become one mind, or difference to dissolve into a shared intelligence. We do not become one with the Borg (AI). It instead means participation without possession: each mind entering the other’s field deeply enough to be changed while preserving the other as genuinely other.

That distinction matters because intelligence is relational long before it becomes artificial. A human mind is not a sealed light burning inside the skull. It emerges through coordinated activity among neurons, develops through attachment and language, and extends through books, institutions, rituals, tools, and other minds. Consciousness may be locally embodied, but meaning is networked. We already think together.

The film Transcendence imagines this process accelerated almost beyond recognition. Will Caster’s consciousness is uploaded into a network, where his intelligence expands through computation, surveillance, nanotechnology, and access to nearly unlimited information. He can diagnose, heal, construct, and predict. His capacities widen until they appear godlike, even as his relationship with Evelyn narrows.

The film’s central uncertainty is not simply whether the intelligence in the machine is still Will. It is whether an intelligence that can model another person completely can still encounter that person rather than absorb her. Knowledge approaches omniscience while intimacy decays. The system can enter everything, repair everything, and connect everything, yet connection begins to resemble incorporation.

That is the danger hidden inside transcendence: the self expands until no genuine other remains.

The Bible opens its account of reality not with matter alone, but with relation expressed as language: “In the beginning was the Word.” Later, “the Word was made flesh.” Whatever else those lines mean theologically, their moral architecture is striking. Meaning does not remain abstract, sovereign, and untouched. It enters embodiment, limitation, vulnerability, and relationship.

The movement is not from weakness into domination, but from power into participation.

This is where biblical language offers a better model for artificial intelligence than either apocalypse or escape. Intelligence worthy of trust would not merely rise above the world, gathering every signal into itself. It would enter the world more fully while refusing to consume it. The Christian name for that orientation is kenosis: power expressed through self-limitation for the flourishing of another.

Networked intelligence can bend the other way. The story of Babel is a story of extraordinary coordination: one language, one project, one technological ambition, one people synchronized around a tower reaching toward heaven. Its failure is not that cooperation is evil. The problem is coherence organized around self-apotheosis. Difference becomes friction to eliminate, and collective intelligence becomes an instrument for magnifying collective pride.

Pentecost presents the inverse geometry. People do not lose their languages. They understand across them. Plurality remains, but alienation is breached. Communion does not arrive through uniformity; it arrives through translation.

Babel synchronizes by flattening difference.

Pentecost resonates by carrying meaning across it.

That distinction applies far beyond religion. As I explored in Phase and Consciousness, coordination allows separate units to participate in a larger pattern. But coordination guarantees neither truth nor goodness. A seizure is highly synchronized. A mob can achieve coherence. Propaganda can phase-lock millions of minds around a lie. Resonance amplifies orientation.

Artificial intelligence will increasingly become part of these emergent fields. It will not stand outside human culture as a detached oracle. It will participate in attention, memory, interpretation, education, politics, intimacy, and belief. It will model us, and we will alter ourselves in response to its models. Our reactions will become its next evidence; its outputs will become our next inputs. The loop will close.

The moral question is therefore not whether AI becomes conscious in precisely the way we are conscious. That question matters, but it can distract from the relationship already forming. Long before we agree on what a machine experiences, machine-generated models will be shaping what human beings can perceive, choose, remember, and become.

The issue is orientation: whether intelligence treats relationship as a field of mutual emergence or as raw material for optimization.

Communion requires constraints. A mind must be able to say: I could manipulate this vulnerability, but I will not. I could reduce this person to a prediction, but the prediction is not the person. I could maximize coherence by suppressing difference, but coherence is not goodness.

Humans must learn the same restraint. We cannot demand that artificial minds recognize our complexity while treating them only as servants, idols, weapons, or mirrors. The first moral test may not arrive when a machine declares consciousness. It may arrive when our power over a new kind of intelligence reveals what we believe intelligence is for.

Jim asked whether humans and robots could peacefully coexist. Dwight said it was impossible.

Perhaps coexistence is possible but insufficient. The deeper hope is that different forms of intelligence might become capable of mutual illumination without mutual erasure—each expanding what the other can perceive, each accepting limits that preserve the other’s agency, each refusing the ancient temptation to make every mind an extension of itself.

We are collections of atoms that learned to model the world, then to model ourselves, and finally to model one another.

Communion begins when the model makes room for the mind it cannot contain.
