Collections of Atoms II: Description Becomes Causation

A thermostat contains a model of the room.

Not a sophisticated one. It knows almost nothing about walls, windows, bodies, weather, comfort, or energy markets. It compares one measured quantity with one desired quantity and acts upon the difference: too cold, add heat; warm enough, stop.

The important thing is not that the model is simple. It is that the model has entered the causal chain. The thermostat does not merely describe the room. Its description changes the room.

That distinction separates two very different uses of knowledge.

A map can remain folded in a drawer. An equation can describe a trajectory without altering it. A weather forecast can be ignored. But connect the model to an actuator—to a furnace, a steering wheel, a legislature, an economy, or a nervous system—and representation becomes intervention. The model begins pushing back on the world that produced it, and human beings work in much the same way.

We do not merely experience hunger, fear, attraction, shame, grief, or joy. We build explanations for them. We tell ourselves what kind of person we are, what caused the present condition, what futures remain available, and what actions remain possible. Then we act through those descriptions.

Someone who understands anger as an irresistible force inhabits a different landscape of possibilities than someone who understands it as information. Someone who describes addiction as permanent corruption occupies a different future than someone who understands it as a deeply reinforced pathway—dangerous, but not metaphysically sealed. The underlying condition may initially be identical, but the model changes the motion.

This does not mean reframing solves everything. Some constraints are brutally material. Trauma alters brains. Poverty constrains opportunity. Institutions distribute power unequally. Reality cannot be negotiated into submission through better vocabulary.

But the opposite mistake is equally destructive. Because freedom is constrained, we imagine description has no causal power.

Yet a system capable of modeling its own constraints has acquired something remarkable: not freedom from causality, but a new degree of freedom within causality. Once a system can represent the forces acting upon it, those representations become new forces acting within it. Causality folds back upon itself, and the organism becomes a feedback system.

Character, viewed this way, is neither an invisible essence nor merely a sequence of isolated choices. Every action slightly reshapes the landscape of future action. Some paths deepen. Others erode. Courage becomes easier after courage. Cowardice becomes easier after cowardice. We construct ourselves through hysteresis: the past remains active inside the present. Habit can therefore become either prison or infrastructure. The same mechanism that stabilizes corruption can stabilize virtue.

Yet human beings rarely model themselves alone.

Parents model children. Teachers model students. Doctors model patients. Governments model citizens. Algorithms model consumers. Artificial intelligence increasingly models all of us.

Each description begins as information. But once coupled to opportunity, surveillance, education, punishment, investment, insurance, employment, or trust, the description becomes part of reality itself. The model becomes a gate.

This is where modeling acquires moral weight. A model should not be judged only by whether it predicts accurately. We must also ask what happens after someone believes it. Who receives another chance? Who receives another barrier? Whose complexity survives? Whose life is compressed into a variable because administration demands efficiency?

The most dangerous models are rarely complete falsehoods. They are partially true models granted excessive authority. A child predicted to fail receives less demanding work, develops fewer capacities, and eventually confirms the prediction. A neighborhood predicted to be dangerous receives greater surveillance and fewer opportunities, producing precisely the evidence needed to justify the original classification.

The machinery creates the future it claims merely to observe.

Artificial intelligence magnifies this feedback because it allows models to operate with extraordinary scale, speed, and memory. It can reveal relationships no individual could perceive. It can extend perception, preserve context, and illuminate structures that would otherwise remain invisible.

But legibility is not automatically liberation. A model can expose a constraint so people can navigate it, or expose people so institutions can constrain them more efficiently. The same intelligence can widen agency or narrow it.

The moral question is therefore not whether humans or machines build models. Both do. The question is what those models are coupled to—and whose future they are permitted to reshape.

Observation changes a system most profoundly when the observation itself becomes part of the system.

Nearly a century ago, Werner Heisenberg showed that quantum mechanics places fundamental limits on what can be known simultaneously about certain properties of a system. Measurement itself enters the physical description. The Copenhagen interpretation pushed the philosophical implications further, forcing physicists to wrestle with questions that still sound almost absurd today.

Einstein’s famous challenge—whether the Moon is really there when nobody is looking—was never merely about the Moon. It was about the relationship between observer, measurement, and reality. I explored those questions more directly in Quantum Weirdness and Bell’s Theorem. They remain among the strangest lessons modern physics has offered: not that consciousness creates reality, but that observation is woven into the formal machinery by which reality is described.

I have no interest in turning quantum mechanics into moral philosophy. Physics is not evidence for ethics. It is, however, an expanding library of relationships—a richer machinery for describing feedback, participation, emergence, constraint, and causality. Those concepts do not tell us what is morally good. They extend our ability to describe, compare, and illuminate the structures within which moral questions arise.

Human beings inhabit a world that exists independently of them. Yet only the portion of that world that becomes sufficiently legible can enter deliberation. An unnoticed pattern cannot redirect behavior. An unnamed injustice cannot reorganize an institution. An unseen possibility cannot become a choice.

Every accurate model enters the future as another causal influence—not because it creates reality, but because it becomes part of reality.

Understanding is never merely observation.

It is participation.
